Soul Foundation

Soul Foundation Interview:

Give us a little background on yourself…. Where are you from?  How long have you been producing?

I’m now based in Leek, Staffs UK. Ive been producing for roughly 5 years, i started off making Jungle under the name Venom then Makaveli, about 3 years ago i started making liquid under the name soul foundation as its always been my passion since hearing the early Good Looking releases back in the day.

How were you introduced to Drum & Bass?

I started going to raves way back in 1988 and fell in love with acid house, from then i spent almost every day in Buzz Records, high wycombe where Madcap and DJ Pulse worked, spending all my money on vinyl. My love back then was Hardcore until one day i bumped into LTJ Bukem in Record Basement, Reading from then on it was DnB all the way for me.

You have a new Artist Profile Album coming out on Soul Deep.  Tell us about the album.

The album just came together by itself.  I sent a demo to Soul Deep never expecting to get them signed and was absolutely buzzing when I got a positive reply from such a massive label.  I just sat and wrote tracks non-stop trying to get enough music for 1 maybe 2 EP’s next thing I knew I had 20 tracks sat there.

What inspired you to write the album?

My Brother,  it probably sounds over dramatic but this album literally saved my life, when my brother passed away 2 years ago producing music was my escape, it took me away from a very dark place, Ironically he hated DnB (laughs) but I knew he was very proud when I started having music signed to labels. For whatever reason, music really can have a big effect of people’s lives.

Who are some of your biggest influences as a producer?

So many to list but the main ones would have to be LTJ Bukem, without him im not sure we would have the music we have now, he was a true pioneer,  Furney, the man is a machine and has never made a bad track, Blame, Technimatic, MJT, ARP-1,  Blade, Makoto and of course the legend MC Conrad (R.I.P). Im also loving a lot of the new breed of producers too such as Dash , Con Figure, Kipsy and Keist

When you’re not listening to D&B, what are your favorite genres & artists to listen to?

I listen to so many different genres from Andrea Bochelli to Slipknott, I absolutely love Volbeat and Shinedown. If i had to pick one though it would have to be The Prodigy

Do you have a favorite Drum & Bass tune, new or old?

I have 2  tunes I could never choose between,Ltj Bukem – Music (Technicolor  rework) i think its as close to perfection as you can get, there’s barely a day goes by that i don’t play it atleast once, and Tayla – Turn it around,  the track is just amazing and the drums are perfection.

You’ve been around the D&B game for a long time.  What do you think of where the scene has evolved to?  And what do you think about the progression of the genre?

I think the scene is just getter better and better, the standard of producing has gone through the roof and i absolutely love the jazz vibes in DnB, theres so many mini genres within liquid but it all comes together as one and works perfectly.

What else do you have coming up that we should all look forward to?

I have releases forthcoming on Default , smooth n groove, and soul feelings to name a few and many more to come on Soul Deep.  I’ve just started to get back into DJ’ing again and at some point I would love to play out or do podcasts or radio shows.

I’d also love to do more collabs and remixes so if anyone wants to, hit me up and lets do this 🙂

Would you like to give any shout outs?

Firstly to my family my mum and dad, Stasia for always being there and my dog Lucy who loves dnb :). Scott Devotion, a great friend for over 20years, chris @ SnG, Ian@Default and yourself of course scott for giving me the opportunity to create this. All the DJs that play my music and last but not least everyone that supports my music, it really is hugely appreciated. Many Thanks : )
